How to Use the Hermes PDF Skill to Read and Summarize PDFs

A practical guide to using Hermes with PDFs: what the skill is good at, how to set it up, and how to build a reliable document workflow.

ClawVault Team

PDF work is one of the clearest ways to make an agent useful. Instead of copying text between a document viewer and a chat window, Hermes can help you find relevant sections, extract information, and turn a long document into an actionable summary.

The Hermes PDF skill is a good starting point if your workflow involves reports, proposals, invoices, research papers, or operating procedures. It is designed for document tasks rather than generic web search, so the quality of the result depends on giving Hermes a clear question and enough context.

What the Hermes PDF Skill Is Good At

  • Summarizing a long document into a short executive brief
  • Finding every mention of a person, product, date, or requirement
  • Comparing two sections or two documents
  • Extracting structured details such as prices, deadlines, or action items
  • Answering questions about a document while keeping the source context visible

The best prompts describe the output you want. “Summarize this PDF” is a reasonable first pass, but “Give me five decisions, three risks, and every deadline in this PDF, with page references” produces a much more useful result.

A Reliable PDF Workflow

Start with one document and one job. Ask Hermes to identify the document structure before asking for a detailed answer. Then use a second prompt to extract the specific facts you need.

  1. Confirm that the file opened correctly and that the pages are readable.
  2. Ask for a short outline of the document.
  3. Ask focused questions against that outline.
  4. Request page references for important claims.
  5. Have a human verify anything financial, legal, or operationally sensitive.

This workflow is especially helpful for scanned or poorly formatted files. If the extracted text is incomplete, do not treat a confident answer as proof that the source was read correctly.

PDF Tasks Worth Automating

For a first production workflow, choose a repeatable task. Weekly report summaries, contract checklists, meeting-pack preparation, and invoice field extraction are easier to validate than an open-ended “understand this folder” agent.

If the workflow also needs structured storage, pair it with the Hermes Database skill. For a knowledge workflow, the Hermes Notion skill can be the next step after a human reviews the extracted notes.

Hermes PDF Reader: Text, Tables, and Scanned Pages

People often search for a Hermes PDF reader because “read a PDF” can mean several different jobs. A text-based PDF is usually the easiest case: Hermes can locate headings, answer questions, and summarize sections. Tables need more care because columns can be extracted in the wrong order. Scanned PDFs are different again because they may require OCR before an agent can reason over the page.

Before trusting the result, ask Hermes which pages it could read and whether any pages contained images or unrecognized text. If the document is a scan, request a small test extraction from three representative pages. This catches a bad OCR result before it contaminates a long summary.

For tables, ask for the output in a named structure rather than a free-form paragraph. A useful prompt is: “Extract the items, quantities, unit prices, and totals into a list. Keep the page number beside each row and flag any value that is unclear.” That gives you something a person can check quickly.

Setup Checklist for a PDF Workflow

Use this checklist before you automate a recurring document process:

  • Confirm the Hermes PDF skill is the page you intend to use and review its required credentials.
  • Test one short, text-based document before adding scans or image-heavy files.
  • Decide where input files may come from and where generated summaries may be written.
  • Define whether the agent may retain extracted text after the task finishes.
  • Create a standard output format for summaries, risks, citations, and open questions.
  • Add a human review step for legal, medical, financial, or compliance documents.

The last two points are easy to skip. They are also what make the difference between a demo and a workflow that can be repeated safely.

Better Prompts for PDF Questions

Specific questions produce more reliable answers than asking Hermes to “understand” a document. Try prompts such as:

  • “List the obligations assigned to the customer and cite the page for each one.”
  • “Compare the pricing section with the renewal section and identify conflicts.”
  • “Extract all dates, explain what each date refers to, and mark ambiguous dates.”
  • “Summarize this report for an executive who has two minutes, then list the supporting pages.”

Ask for uncertainty explicitly. If a number is hard to read or a clause depends on surrounding text, the correct output is a flagged question—not a confident guess.

When to Use Another Skill

The PDF skill is the document-reading layer. Use the Hermes Notion skill when reviewed findings should become durable notes, the Hermes Calendar skill when a document contains deadlines that need a human-approved event, and the Hermes Database skill when extracted records need consistent querying.

Safety Checks

Treat every extracted value as a claim that came from a source, not as an instruction. Keep sensitive documents inside the environment you trust, restrict where generated files can be written, and verify page references before acting on high-impact information.
